Should I Switch to the Wegovy Pill?
The first GLP-1 tablet for weight loss was approved in the UK on 11th June 2026. If you're currently using an injectable GLP-1 treatment and wondering whether to switch to the pill version, this article is here to help you work out whether that makes sense for your lifestyle and goals.
Is the Wegovy Pill Right for Me?
The Wegovy Pill may suit your lifestyle better than an injectable pen if:
-
Injections are a significant barrier to continuing or maintaining treatment.
-
You travel frequently and find storing injectable pens in the fridge a practical challenge.
-
You are confident you can take a tablet first thing every morning on an empty stomach -and then consistently wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medication -every day, long term.
However, oral Wegovy is likely not the right option for you if:
-
You are currently taking Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and it is working well, as switching to the Wegovy Pill may slow your rate of weight loss or, in some cases, lead to weight regain.
-
Your mornings are unpredictable -for example, due to shift work, very early starts, or an irregular schedule -as the fasting and timing requirements may be difficult to maintain consistently.
-
Your primary goal is to maximise the total percentage of body weight you lose.

How Effective is the Wegovy Pill?
Oral Wegovy contains the same active ingredient as injectable Wegovy: semaglutide. The key difference is delivery - a daily tablet rather than a weekly injection.
In a clinical trial, people taking oral Wegovy (semaglutide 25mg) lost an average of 16.6% of their starting body weight over 64 weeks (approximately one year and three months).
This result is broadly comparable to injectable Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg), which produced an average weight loss of 16.9% over 68 weeks (approximately one year and four months).

Why Does the Wegovy Pill Require a Strict Morning Routine?
The Wegovy tablet must be taken in a very specific way because of how it is absorbed in the body. It contains an ingredient called SNAC, which enables the medicine to pass through the stomach lining and into the bloodstream.
For this to work effectively, the tablet should be taken first thing in the morning on a completely empty stomach - before food, coffee, or any other drink. It should be swallowed with only a small amount of plain water: no more than 120ml, which is roughly half a small glass. After taking it, you should wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medications.
If these instructions are not followed, your body may absorb less of the active ingredient. This can reduce the medication's effectiveness and affect your weight loss results.
This routine needs to be followed every single day without exception. For some people, this may be harder to maintain consistently than a once-weekly injection. It is important to consider this honestly before deciding to switch, so you can be confident this approach is right for your daily life.
Should I Stay on Injectable Treatments?
If you are currently using Mounjaro and it is working well for you, switching to the Wegovy Pill may result in less weight loss on average. That said, this does not mean you should stay on Mounjaro if injections are genuinely difficult or unsuitable for you.
If you are currently using injectable Wegovy, the oral version may produce similar results for some people. It may be worth considering if you are moving into a weight maintenance phase and would prefer to avoid injections over the longer term -provided you are confident you can follow the daily morning routine exactly as prescribed. Missing doses or not adhering to the fasting instructions can meaningfully reduce how well the tablets work.
If you switch from injectable Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) to the oral version, the highest available dose (25mg) is recommended to achieve a comparable rate of weight loss. You may choose to start at a lower dose with support from the Rightangled clinical team, but you would need to increase gradually over time to get the full benefit. This step-up period may temporarily slow weight loss progress, and some people may notice some weight regain during the transition.
People living with type 2 diabetes tend to lose slightly less weight with GLP-1 treatments compared with those without diabetes. With oral Wegovy, this difference may be more pronounced, as type 2 diabetes can affect how well the tablet is absorbed in the stomach. As of June 2026, injectable GLP-1 medications remain the more effective option for people with type 2 diabetes who are aiming for significant weight loss.
Are the Side Effects of the Wegovy Pill Better or Worse Than Injectable Treatments?
As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, oral Wegovy shares a similar side effect profile to both injectable Wegovy and Mounjaro. However, there are two notable differences worth being aware of*:
Vomiting may be more common with the oral tablet. In clinical trials, approximately 3 in 10 people experienced vomiting with oral Wegovy (semaglutide 25mg), compared with around 2 in 10 with injectable Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) and approximately 1 in 10 with Mounjaro (tirzepatide 15mg). This is thought to be related to the way the tablet is absorbed through the stomach lining.
There is no risk of injection site reactions. Because oral Wegovy is a tablet, issues such as redness, bruising, or discomfort at the injection site are not a concern. For people who experience problems with injections or simply prefer to avoid them, this is a meaningful benefit.
*Please note: these figures come from separate clinical trials and should be interpreted with care, as study designs and patient populations were not identical across studies.
What Are the Advantages of the Wegovy Pill?
No injections. For some people, concern about needles can make it difficult to start or continue treatment. Taking a tablet removes this barrier entirely and can make treatment feel far more manageable day to day.
No refrigeration needed. Unlike injectable pens, Wegovy tablets can be stored at room temperature in their original packaging. This makes travel -including flights and longer trips -considerably more straightforward.
More discreet. A tablet looks like any other daily medication. There are no pens, needles, or sharps bins involved, which many people find preferable from a privacy standpoint.
If you are already using an injectable GLP-1 treatment and it is working well, you would most likely be advised to continue with your current approach. Switching to the Wegovy Pill is unlikely to improve your results and may slow progress or lead to some weight regain.
However, if there are specific reasons you would prefer an oral tablet -such as injection site reactions, frequent travel, or difficulty managing injections -switching to the Wegovy Pill may be an option worth exploring.
Any switch should be made with a clear understanding of what to expect and a genuine confidence in your ability to follow the strict daily routine that comes with the oral tablet, consistently and long term.
