Medication details

Description

Anusol Suppositories are used for the symptomatic relief of internal haemorrhoids (piles) and itching around the back passage (pruritus ani). Each suppository is inserted into the back passage, where its active ingredients act locally to soothe and protect the affected area. Anusol is a widely recognised and trusted treatment for these common conditions, available without a prescription.

Directions

Wash and dry the anal area before use. Remove the wrapper and insert one suppository into the back passage. Use one at night, one in the morning, and one after each bowel movement, up to a maximum of three suppositories in any 24 hours. Do not use for more than seven days at a time. Wash your hands before and after use. Not to be taken by mouth.

Ingredients

Each suppository contains the active ingredients Zinc Oxide 296 mg, Bismuth Oxide 24 mg, Bismuth Subgallate 59 mg and Balsam Peru 49 mg, in a suppository base. These work locally on the lining of the back passage and are not absorbed into the bloodstream.

Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon. Some people may experience skin sensitisation or a localised reaction, which has been associated with Balsam Peru. Stop use and seek advice if you notice a rash, itching, swelling or other signs of an allergic reaction. If symptoms do not improve within seven days, or if you notice bleeding from the back passage, speak to a clinician.

Warnings

For rectal use only. Do not take by mouth. Do not use for longer than seven days without advice. Not recommended for children under 12 years of age. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, seek advice before use. Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. If you have bleeding from the back passage or are unsure whether your symptoms are due to haemorrhoids, speak to a clinician before use.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

How are the suppositories different from Anusol cream or ointment?

The suppositories are inserted into the back passage to treat internal piles, whereas the cream and ointment are applied to the external area. If you have both internal and external symptoms, the suppositories can be used alongside the cream or ointment, and the cream can also help lubricate insertion.

Are the active ingredients absorbed into the body?

No. The active ingredients work locally on the lining of the back passage and are not absorbed into the bloodstream, which is part of why the product is suitable for short-term self-care of piles.

Can children use Anusol Suppositories?

They are intended for adults and children aged 12 and over, and are not recommended for children under 12. If a younger child needs treatment, contact our pharmacy team at info@rightangled.com.

When should I stop and seek advice?

If your symptoms have not improved after seven days, or if you notice bleeding from the back passage, stop and speak to a clinician. Our pharmacy team is available at info@rightangled.com.
