The short answer will surprise most people looking for the best place to inject Wegovy: pharmacologically, there is no single best site. The prescribing information states that similar exposure is achieved whether you inject into the abdomen, the thigh or the upper arm, and that the site can be changed without any dose adjustment.

What does matter is technique, rotation and comfort. Here is how to choose in practice.

The three licensed sites for a Wegovy injection

The Wegovy injection is given subcutaneously, into the layer of fat just under the skin. It is never injected into muscle or into a vein. Three sites are licensed:

  • Abdomen. The largest usable area and the easiest to reach. Stay at least 5 cm clear of your navel.

  • Front or outer thigh. Straightforward to see and reach while seated.

  • Back or outer upper arm. Licensed, but awkward to do on yourself. Many people need someone else to administer it here.

Anywhere else is outside the licence. The buttocks, for instance, are not a licensed site for this medicine.

Does the site change how well it works?

This is the question sitting behind almost every search for the best place to inject Wegovy, and the prescribing information answers it directly. Similar exposure was achieved with subcutaneous administration in the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. Absolute bioavailability is around 89%, and peak concentration is reached one to three days after the dose.

Some pharmacokinetic work suggests the abdomen absorbs marginally faster. For a medicine with a half-life of roughly one week, a few hours of difference in time to peak is not clinically meaningful. You are not going to lose more weight by picking one site over another.

The same applies to side effects. There is no good evidence that any licensed site reduces nausea, which is a common assumption. Gastrointestinal effects come from the drug acting systemically, not from where the needle went in.

Choosing the best place to inject Wegovy in practice

If absorption is equal across all three, the decision comes down to practical factors rather than clinical ones.

Site

Suits you if

Watch out for

Abdomen

You want the easiest self-injection and the most room to rotate

Keep 5 cm from the navel, avoid the waistband line

Thigh

You find the abdomen uncomfortable or have little fat there

Use the front or outer thigh, not the inner thigh

Upper arm

Someone can inject for you, or you rotate through it occasionally

Hard to pinch the skin one-handed

For most people self-injecting, the abdomen is the practical default. That is a convenience judgement, not a clinical one.

Rotation matters more than picking the best place to inject Wegovy

If you take one thing from this article, take this. Change the injection spot every single week, even if you stay within the same body region.

Repeatedly injecting the same square of skin can cause lipohypertrophy, a thickened lump of fatty tissue under the surface. It is well documented across injectable treatments. Beyond the cosmetic issue, scarred or thickened tissue absorbs unpredictably, so injecting into it can genuinely reduce how much medicine reaches your bloodstream. This is the one way the site choice can affect your results, and it comes from poor rotation rather than from which region you picked.

A simple method: divide your abdomen into four quadrants and work around them in order, then move to a thigh, then the other thigh. Note the spot in your phone alongside your weekly dose reminder. You can read more about tolerability in our guide to Wegovy safety.

Where not to inject

Avoid any area of skin that is:

  • Tender, bruised, red or swollen

  • Hard, lumpy or scarred, including old surgical scars

  • Marked by stretch marks

  • Affected by a rash or skin condition

  • Within 5 cm of the navel

Also avoid injecting into muscle. The licensed route is subcutaneous, and going deeper changes how the medicine is absorbed. If you are very lean, pinch a fold of skin and inject into that fold rather than into a flat surface.

Technique points that matter more than location

Wash your hands, and check the solution before use. It should be clear and colourless, with no particles. Rotate through a new needle for every injection, and place used needles straight into a sharps container.

Position matters more than people expect. Sit down for a thigh or abdominal injection and let the muscle relax fully. Tensing the area makes the injection sharper and can push the needle deeper than intended. If you are using the upper arm, rest the arm rather than holding it out.

If you are consistently bruising, struggling to reach a site, or finding the injection painful every week, that is worth raising rather than tolerating. A prescriber can review your technique and suggest a site that suits your body better.

Take the injection on the same day each week. The time of day is flexible, and it can be given with or without food. If your routine changes, the injection day can be moved provided there is enough time between doses, so check the leaflet supplied with your pen.

For those who would rather avoid needles altogether, two licensed oral options now exist in the UK: Wegovy tablets, which require a fasted morning routine, and Foundayo, which has no food or fasting restrictions. Other injectable options such as Mounjaro use the same three licensed sites.

Sharps disposal

Used needles and pens are clinical waste. Never put them in household rubbish or recycling. Use a proper sharps bin, keep it out of reach of children, and arrange disposal through your pharmacy or local authority. MHRA guidance on GLP-1 medicines covers safe disposal alongside general safe use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best place to inject Wegovy for fewer side effects?

There is no evidence that any licensed site reduces side effects. Gradual dose escalation is what limits them.

Is the stomach better than the thigh?

Exposure is similar. The abdomen is easier to reach, which is why most people choose it.

Can I use the same site every week?

The same region, yes. The same exact spot, no. Rotate to avoid tissue thickening.

Does it need to hurt?

No. Letting the pen reach room temperature and inserting at the correct angle both help.

Patients based in Europe are served by Medetone, and those in the United States by Medetone US.

Summary

There is no single best place to inject Wegovy in terms of how well the medicine works. All three licensed sites deliver similar exposure. The abdomen is the most practical for self-injection, the thigh is a solid alternative, and the upper arm works when someone can help. Rotating the exact spot every week is the part that genuinely protects your results.

“People spend a lot of energy choosing between the stomach and the thigh, and almost none on rotation. It is the wrong way round. Injecting into the same thickened patch for months will affect absorption. Choosing the thigh over the abdomen will not.”
