MEDICATION DETAILS

Description

Utrogestan contains a hormone called progesterone and should be taken together with another medicine called oestrogen. The combination of Utrogestan and oestrogen belongs to a group of medicines called hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

As you get near to the menopause, the amount of the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone in your body declines. HRT such as Utrogestan replaces these hormones and reduces the symptoms of the menopause.

Why Utrogestan is taken with oestrogen - If your HRT contains only oestrogen the lining of the womb could build up causing many health problems. Taking Utrogestan together with oestrogen sheds the womb lining, thus preventing these problems occurring.

Directions

Take ONE(100mg) capsule at bedtime from Day 1 to Day 25 of each therapeutic cycle

Ingredients

Each capsule contains 100mg progesterone.
The other ingredients in the capsule shell are gelatin, glycerol, titanium dioxide and purified water.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Common side effects may include:
• Bloating of the stomach
• Depression
• Breast tenderness
• Hot flashes
• Vaginal discharge
• Joint pain
• Urinary problems

Warnings

You may have some bleeding at the end of each month, rather like a period. If you experience any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Why should I take Utrogestan at bedtime?

Progesterone can cause drowsiness and dizziness. Taking it at bedtime means these effects happen while you are asleep rather than during the day. It should also be taken on an empty stomach, as food can affect how it is absorbed.

Is the bleeding at the end of each cycle normal?

Yes. A few days of withdrawal bleeding after each course of Utrogestan is expected and is a sign that the womb lining is shedding as intended. This is part of how it protects the womb when you are taking oestrogen. If you have unexpected or heavy bleeding, speak to a clinician.

Is Utrogestan a contraceptive?

No. Although it contains progesterone, Utrogestan is designed as part of HRT and does not work as a contraceptive. If you need contraception, discuss this separately with our pharmacy team at info@rightangled.com.

Do I need to tell my surgeon if I am having an operation?

Yes. You may need to stop HRT about four to six weeks before planned surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots. Tell your surgeon and our pharmacy team so the timing can be planned. Your clinician will let you know when it is safe to restart.
