MEDICATION DETAILS

Description

Tamsulosin 400mcg MR Capsules

Tamsulosin 400mcg modified release capsules are used for the urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia. The modified release formulation delivers the medicine steadily so a single daily capsule provides cover across the day and night. It is a medicine that requires a clinician to assess whether it is suitable for you.

How it works

Tamsulosin is an alpha blocker. As the prostate enlarges it presses on the urethra, and the smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder neck tightens around it, which produces hesitancy, a weak stream, dribbling and frequent trips to the toilet, particularly at night. Tamsulosin relaxes that muscle so the passage opens and flow improves. It eases symptoms rather than shrinking the prostate itself.

How to use it

Swallow one capsule whole with water once a day, at the same time each day, after the same meal. Do not crush, chew or open it, since that destroys the modified release and delivers the dose all at once. Improvement is usually noticeable within the first couple of weeks. Rise slowly from sitting or lying for the first few days, as alpha blockers can cause dizziness when starting.

Who it is for

It is for adult men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate where a clinician has confirmed it is appropriate and has arranged appropriate review. Your clinician needs to know about low blood pressure, fainting, liver or kidney problems, other blood pressure medicines and treatments for erectile dysfunction, which can combine to lower blood pressure further.

Safety and when to get advice

Dizziness, reduced libido, erectile difficulty and reduced ejaculate volume are the most commonly reported effects. Seek prompt advice for fainting, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, or signs of an allergic reaction. Tell your eye surgeon that you take tamsulosin before any cataract surgery, as it affects the iris during the procedure. See a doctor urgently if you cannot pass urine at all, or if you notice blood in your urine. Our UK pharmacy team can answer questions about this product before you buy.

Common questions

Can I open the capsule?
No. It must be swallowed whole to keep the modified release intact.

How soon will it help?
Many men notice a difference within the first couple of weeks.

Why mention it before eye surgery?
Tamsulosin affects the iris during cataract surgery, so the surgeon needs to know in advance.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with the pack before use.

Directions

To ensure optimal results and safety, adhere to the following guidelines:
Take one capsule daily, after breakfast or the first daily meal.
