MEDICATION DETAILS

Description

Nasacort Nasal Spray

Nasacort Nasal Spray is used to relieve the symptoms of nasal allergies. It contains a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the nasal passages, easing congestion, sneezing, a runny nose and itching caused by allergens such as pollen, dust mites and pet dander. It is a medicine that requires a clinician to assess whether it is suitable for you.

How it works

An allergen landing on the lining of the nose sets off an inflammatory response, and it is that inflammation, not the allergen itself, which produces the swelling, the streaming and the itch. A corticosteroid spray damps the response down at source, which is why it handles blockage as well as sneezing. It is used daily and builds over several days rather than acting on the first dose.

How to use it

Shake the bottle, prime it if the pack says to, then insert the nozzle into one nostril aiming slightly outwards, away from the central wall of the nose. Spray while breathing in gently, and avoid sniffing hard afterwards so the spray stays where it lands. Use it every day through the season rather than only on bad days, and wipe the nozzle and replace the cap after use.

Who it is for

It is for adults and children as stated, where a clinician has confirmed it is appropriate. It is not suitable for anyone sensitive to the ingredients, and a clinician should know about recent nasal surgery or injury, an untreated nasal infection, and eye conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts.

Safety and when to get advice

Nosebleeds, nasal dryness, soreness and an unpleasant taste are the most commonly reported effects, and aiming the spray outwards reduces the chance of nosebleeds. Tell a clinician about disturbed vision, a nosebleed that keeps recurring, or symptoms that are not controlled after a few weeks of correct daily use. Seek advice for facial pain, fever or thick discoloured discharge, which suggest infection rather than allergy. Our UK pharmacy team can answer questions about this product before you buy.

Common questions

Why is it not working yet?
Steroid nasal sprays build over several days of daily use. Technique matters as much as the dose.

Which way should I aim it?
Slightly outwards, away from the central wall of the nose.

Can I use it with an antihistamine?
Often yes. Check with a pharmacist or your clinician.

Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with the pack before use.

Directions

Shake the Nasacort spray bottle gently before each use.
Clear your nasal passages by gently blowing your nose.
Tilt your head forward and insert the nozzle of the spray into one nostril, sealing the other nostril by pressing it closed with your finger.
While breathing in gently through your nostril, press down on the spray nozzle to release the medication. Breathe out through your mouth.
Repeat the process for the other nostril.
After use, wipe the nozzle with a clean tissue and replace the cap.
Nasacort is typically used once daily, or as directed by your healthcare provider. It may take several days to experience the full benefits.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Nasacort Nasal Spray is Triamcinolone Acetonide, a corticosteroid. Each spray delivers a measured dose of this medication to your nasal passages. It works locally to reduce inflammation and allergic reactions in the nasal tissues.

Side Effects

Like all medications, Nasacort Nasal Spray can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Common side effects may include:
Mild nasal irritation or dryness
Sneezing
Nosebleeds
Throat irritation
These side effects are usually mild and tend to decrease as your body adjusts to the medication. If you experience severe or persistent side effects, contact your healthcare provider.

Warnings

Nasacort Nasal Spray is for nasal use only. Avoid getting it in your eyes or mouth. If accidental contact occurs, rinse with water.
Before using Nasacort, inform your healthcare provider of any medical conditions you have, especially if you have had recent nasal surgery or injury.
Inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking, as they may interact with Nasacort.
Do not use Nasacort if you have a known allergy to triamcinolone acetonide or any of the product's ingredients.
