What is the best time of day to take Wegovy?

There are now two answers to this question, and they contradict each other. The best time of day to take Wegovy depends entirely on whether you have been prescribed the weekly injection or the daily tablet. For one, the hour is irrelevant. For the other, it decides whether the medicine works at all.

Most guidance online was written before the tablet reached the UK in June 2026 and still answers only for the pen. Here is the correct answer for each.

First, which Wegovy do you have?

Both contain semaglutide. They are not interchangeable.

Best time of day to take Wegovy injection

The clinically honest answer: it does not matter. The injection can be given at any time of day, with or without food. There is no evidence that morning is better than evening, or that any hour improves results.

The reason is pharmacological. Semaglutide injected under the skin forms a depot that releases slowly, and the molecule has a half-life of around one week. Blood levels stay broadly flat across the seven days between doses. Shifting your injection from 8am to 8pm changes almost nothing about the concentration curve.

What does matter is the same day every week. That is about habit and adherence rather than pharmacology. A fixed day that you will not forget beats a theoretically ideal hour that you will.

Some people prefer evening injections so they can sleep through any mild nausea during dose escalation. Others prefer mornings so they can monitor how they feel across the day. Both are reasonable. Neither is clinically superior, and you do not need to keep the same clock time each week.

Best time of day to take Wegovy tablets

Here the answer flips completely. First thing in the morning, on a genuinely empty stomach, and nothing else afterwards for half an hour. These are not preferences. They are absorption requirements.

• Take it first thing in the morning, before anything else.

• Your stomach must be empty after fasting for at least 8 hours. That fast includes water.

• Swallow the Wegovy tablet whole with a sip of plain water, no more than around 120 ml. More water than that reduces absorption.

• Do not split, crush or chew it.

• Wait at least 30 minutes before any food, any other drink, and any other oral medicine.

Eating or drinking sooner than 30 minutes lowers how much semaglutide reaches your bloodstream. This instruction appears in the patient information leaflet rather than as general advice, which tells you how central it is to the medicine working.

Why one is flexible and the other is not

Semaglutide is a peptide, a relatively large molecule that digestive enzymes break down readily. An injection bypasses the gut entirely, which is why timing is free.

The tablet cannot bypass anything. It is paired with an absorption enhancer that works in a small area of the stomach lining, and only for a short window. Food, other liquids and competing medicines all interfere with that window. So the best time of day to take Wegovy in tablet form is dictated by stomach chemistry, not convenience.

This also explains the dose gap. The tablet maintenance dose is 25 mg daily against 2.4 mg weekly by injection, because oral absorption is far less efficient.

Choosing your weekly injection day

• Pick a day you are reliably at home. Sunday evening and Friday morning are popular for exactly that reason.

• Consider your working week if you are still escalating, so any early side effects land when you have more control over your schedule.

• Anchor it to something fixed, such as a weekly shop or a standing appointment, rather than relying on memory alone.

• Rotate injection sites between abdomen, thigh and upper arm, avoiding areas that are tender or bruised.

You can change your injection day if your routine changes, provided you leave at least 3 days between two doses. Check the leaflet supplied with your pen, as guidance differs between products.

If you miss a dose

Injection. If your next scheduled dose is more than 2 days away, take the missed dose as soon as you can, then continue as normal. If your next dose is less than 2 days away, skip it entirely. Never take two injections close together.

Tablets. Skip the missed day completely and take your next tablet the following morning as usual. Never take two tablets to compensate.

The interaction most people miss

If you take the tablet, the 30 minute rule applies to all other oral medicines, not just food. That matters most for levothyroxine, which itself requires an empty stomach first thing, and for oral anticoagulants such as warfarin.

Two medicines competing for the same fasted morning window is a genuine scheduling problem, not a minor inconvenience. Raise it with your prescriber before you start rather than trying to solve it yourself.
