Heard this before?

There's nothing to be ashamed of. Some things in our bodies we can't control. It was never just about willpower.

It was never just about willpower

Judged on a guess

People decide what you eat, how you live and how hard you're trying, all from across a room. Here's what they got wrong, and what was actually going on.

What people assume

“You must live on fast food.”

If they saw what's actually on your plate, they'd be surprised.

“Just cut that out and move more.”

You already are. It still isn't happening.

“Your body is a choice you made.”

Said by people whose bodies have never argued back.

What's actually going on

Weight is not a readout of your diet.

Two people can eat the same week and land in completely different places.

Past forty, the rules quietly change.

Age, stress and long hours sitting stack up until the old approach stops answering.

Some of this is physiology, not character.

Hormones shift on their own schedule. Nobody votes on it.

“There's nothing to be ashamed of. There are things in our bodies that we can't control.”

"There's nothing to be ashamed of."

People decide the reason in about a second, from across a room. That you must eat badly, that you're not really trying. In this film, Rightangled patients describe what was actually going on.

Different people, different starting points, the same frustration: "If you would know how little I eat, you'd be surprised that I weigh what I weigh."

"There are things in our bodies that we can't control."

Different people. Different starting points. The same thing kept coming up: everyone had already decided why.

What actually shapes weight

Find the willpower

People point at one factor and stop there. Tap any of these to add or remove it, then look at how small a part willpower really plays.

Six of these are things you were handed. It was never just about willpower.

Illustrative only. These are examples of factors that may contribute, and the balance is different for every person.

FAQs

I eat well and it still isn't shifting. Why?

Because weight isn't a straight readout of what's on your plate. Appetite hormones, insulin response, sleep, stress and years of dieting all shape where your body settles, and two people can eat the same week and land somewhere completely different. Doing everything right and seeing nothing move is the most common story we hear.

Does it really get harder after forty?

Many patients tell us that's exactly when the old approach stopped answering. Hormonal shifts, more sedentary work, accumulated stress and changes in how your body handles energy tend to compound around that stage of life. It isn't imagined, and it isn't a sign you stopped trying.

How do I deal with people assuming it's my fault?

Most of our patients have had that conversation more times than they can count, usually with someone who has never had to try. You don't owe anyone an explanation of what you eat. As one patient puts it in this film, there's nothing to be ashamed of, and some things in our bodies we can't control.

Isn't treatment just admitting I couldn't do it myself?

It's the opposite of that. You've been doing it yourself, for years, against a biology built to resist. Treatment works with your body's own appetite signals so that the effort you're already making finally has somewhere to land, and everything is prescriber led and reviewed as you go.
