Rybelsus is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which means that it works by increasing the release of insulin and decreasing the production of glucose in the liver. This results in improved glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, GLP-1 is also known to reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness, which can contribute to weight loss.

Weight gain is in the most general term, when an individual eats too much and doesn't move enough. But there are many sub-reasons as to why an individual can gain weight.

One of the most common causes of weight gain is binge eating. Binge eating is when an individual eats food which contains a high amount of sugar and fats, then does the same thing over and over again once the sugar rush of the previous food disappears. Also the amount of times a day someone eats can lead to weight gain, regardless of whether they are not eating highly concentrated fatty/sugary foods or healthy foods, portion size and frequency all contribute to weight gain.

Lack of exercise and movement can lead to weight gain. Things like driving to work when a walk is possible, or taking the lift when the stairs are available are small factors that can contribute hugely to an individual's weight. It is recommended that all adults do at least 1 hour of exercise a day, especially when an individual's job means they have to be sitting for large amounts of hours in the day.

Rybelsus should be taken on an empty stomach and at least 30 minutes before your first meal of the day.

The NHS have listed some ways that you can keep weight off after losing weight. These include sticking to lower calorie eating, planning ahead, staying active, watching your weight by weighing yourself regularly, getting support from other people on a weight loss journey, keeping variety in your life and setting yourself goals. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.

The starting dose for weight loss is 3mg which should be taken for at least four weeks. Once stabilised on 3mg, patients can increase to 7mg and then 14mg if needed. Your dose is increased gradually to promote sustainable and healthy weight loss.
