Wegovy weight loss injection

Several studies have shown that Wegovy is effective at helping people lose weight. In three of the studies, participants were people who had previously tried and failed to lose weight and had a BMI of at least 30 kg/m2 or a BMI of at least 27 kg/m2 plus a weight-related health condition. These studies found that people treated with Wegovy were able to lose an average of 15% of their body weight after 68 weeks, compared to a 2% weight loss in the placebo group. In addition, 84% of the Wegovy group lost at least 5% of their body weight, compared to 31% in the placebo group.

A fourth study involving people with type 2 diabetes found that those treated with Wegovy were able to lose an average of 10% of their body weight after 68 weeks, compared to a 3% weight loss in the placebo group. 67% of the Wegovy group lost at least 5% of their body weight, compared to 30% in the placebo group. This study also found that the effects of Wegovy were maintained over the first 20 weeks, but that people needed to continue taking the medication in order to avoid regaining weight.

The most common side effects associated with Wegovy are headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain.

Wegovy injections are administered once a week into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. The injections come in a variety of dosages, and the specific dosage a person receives will depend on where they are in their treatment journey. The dosage is gradually increased over time, a process known as titration, to ensure that the person can tolerate the medication and any potential side effects. If the treatment is well-tolerated, the dosing schedule will be as follows:

0.25 mg per week for weeks 1-4,

0.5 mg per week for weeks 5-8,

1 mg per week for weeks 9-12,

1.7 mg per week for weeks 13-16,

and 2.4 mg per week for week 17 and beyond.

Wegovy is intended for use by adults aged 18-75 who have a BMI of 30 or above,

or a BMI of 27 or above AND a weight-related health condition such as

(asthma, cardiovascular disease, depression, diabetes, fatty liver disease, gallbladder disease, high blood pressure, a history of certain cancers, osteoarthritis or gout, or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).


Wegovy should not be used by people who are over 75 years old, pregnant or breastfeeding, have liver, kidney, or heart failure, an eating disorder, or pancreatitis, or who are taking insulin, sulphonylureas, or other weight loss medications that work in a similar way to Wegovy, such as Victoza, Saxenda, and Ozempic.
