Pre-Filled Pen

Ozempic (Semaglutide) is an injectable drug used to treat type 2 diabetes and it has a weight loss effect by reducing appetite and promoting feelings of fullness. It works by mimicking the effects of naturally occurring glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which is a hormone that regulates appetite and glucose levels in the body. Ozempic is not indicated for Weight loss in the UK and is currently prescribed off-label.

The injection pen should be used as part of a comprehensive weight loss program that includes a healthy diet and physical activity.

Patients should always talk to their doctor about their medical history, any existing conditions, and potential drug interactions before starting treatment with Ozempic.

    What is it used for?

Ozempic is an injectable drug used to treat type 2 diabetes and it has a weight loss effect. It contains a GLP-1 agonist, which means it mimics a naturally produced hormone called glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). This hormone is partly responsible for regulating hunger. In the UK Ozempic use for weight loss is not licensed.

    How does Ozempic work?

Ozempic works by binding to GLP-1 receptors and stimulates insulin release when you need it. It helps lower your blood sugar. It also helps to reduce the food leaving your stomach which leads to weight loss and controlling your blood sugar.

    How do you take it?

To administer Ozempic, use a subcutaneous injection once a week in areas such as the front of your waist, front of your thighs, or upper arm. Make sure to avoid injecting into a muscle or vein. Keep the medication in a refrigerator before opening and protect it from light. Once opened, it can be stored for up to 6 weeks in a refrigerator or at a temperature below 30°C, but should not be frozen. Always keep the pen cap on to protect it from light and discard the medicine if the solution is discolored.

The starting dose of Ozempic is 0.25 mg for the first 4 weeks, followed by an increase to 0.50 mg for the next 4 weeks, and then 1 mg thereafter.

If you miss a dose of Ozempic and it has been 5 days or less since your last injection, use it as soon as you remember and resume your regular dosing schedule. However, if it has been more than 5 days, skip the missed dose and continue with your next scheduled dose. It is important not to use a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

    Possible side effect?

Ozempic is considered a safe agent if used as directed. In general, the most common side effect is related to gastrointestinal reactions.
