Iron is an important mineral needed for body growth and development. It is used by your body to make hemoglobin - a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lung to other parts of the body - and myoglobin, a protein that provides oxygen to your muscles. Iron is also important for producing hormones. We will look at your iron status, and generate a report according to your needs.

This test measures your:

✔️ Iron

✔️ Ferritin

✔️ Transferrin (FESA)

✔️ Total Iron-binding capacity (TIBC)

✔️ Unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC)

Sample collection method:

☝️🩸 Finger prick

Many factors, such as environmental, can alter your iron levels. Our kit and report is designed to help you understand your results and how best you can ensure a stable level of iron in your body.

    "Interesting details on some of the health risks I need to be aware of. Some were very surprising as there has been no family history - which I would have expected with the DNA test results. It might be good to combine DNA with blood test to see that if you are likely to be low on for example folates, to see if you actually are low on these. Maybe an idea?"

    • More about the Iron Biomarkers

    When you don’t have enough iron in your body it can lead to iron deficiency and anaemia, whereas too much iron can cause liver and heart problems. Our Iron Status test will help you keep on top of your iron levels and optimise your chance of having a healthier body. The 5 biomarkers that we test for and analyse are;

    ✔️Transferrin (FESA)
    ✔️Total Iron-binding capacity (TIBC)
    ✔️Unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC)

    The 5 biomarkers looked at by the Iron Status test;

    ✔️Iron is an essential mineral used by the body for growth and development. Our body uses iron to make haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body. Iron is also needed to make hormones.

    ✔️Ferritin is a protein that stores iron, releasing it when your body needs it.

    ✔️Transferrin is a protein produced by the liver, it’s a major vehicle for iron delivery to cells.

    ✔️Total Iron-binding capacity is a blood test that measures the quantity of iron present in the bloodstream.

    ✔️Unsaturated iron binding capacity is a blood test that is often done to check either iron deficiency or iron overload. It helps determine the ability of Transferrin to transfer iron in the blood.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What can cause iron levels to change?

    Iron deficiency has many causes. These causes mainly fall into two categories:
    Increased iron needs — this may be related to different conditions such as pregnancy (pregnant women have higher iron needs), and people with frequent blood losses because together with blood, iron is also lost. Increased blood loss can occur with heavy menstrual periods, frequent blood donations, as well as with some stomach and intestinal conditions (food sensitivity, hookworms etc.)
    Decreased iron intake or absorption — the amount of iron absorbed from the diet depends on the food source (iron from animal sources is absorbed two to three times more than iron from plants); some substances, eg. calcium, decrease iron absorption from a meal. However, for healthy individuals who consume a varied diet, the amount of iron inhibition from these substances is usually not a concern.

    How do you know if you need an Iron Status Test?
