Flomaxtra contains the active substance tamsulosin hydrochloride. Tamsulosin works by blocking alpha receptors that are found in the muscle in the prostate gland. The prostate gland, which is found only in men, lies at the top of the tube connecting the bladder to the outside (urethra). The prostate gland often enlarges with advancing age, pressing on the urethra and obstructing the flow of urine from the bladder.

Tamsulosin causes the muscle in the prostate to relax. This relieves the pressure on the urethra and allows urine to flow freely past the prostate gland. This makes it easier to pass urine and empty the bladder.

About Benign Prostate Hyperplasia

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (also known as BPH) is when there is an enlargement of the prostate which is non-harmful (Benign). It is very common in men as they begin to age, but there is a common misconception that enlargement of the prostate has a direct link to an increased risk of prostate cancer which is not true. It is evident in the name as the enlargement is “benign” (not harmful), meaning the overall risk of prostate cancer is no different between men with an enlarged prostate and men without an enlarged prostate.

What causes Benign Prostate Hyperplasia?

The cause of BPH is still currently unknown to this day, however, many experts believe the reasoning behind this enlargement is linked to both age and hormonal changes. The overall hormonal balance depletes and changes as you get older, which could be the reason for the enlargement.

What are the treatment options?

The treatment for Benign Prostate Enlargement depends on how severe symptoms are. The NHS recommends following some lifestyle changes to help the condition, such as exercising regularly, drinking less alcohol, caffeine or fizzy drinks, limiting your intake of artificial sweeteners, exercising regularly and drinking less in the evening. Medicine will help reduce the size of the prostate and relax your bladder, so is usually recommended as a treatment option to treat moderate to severe symptoms of the condition.
