About Thrush

  • About Thrush

  • What causes Thrush?

  • How can Thrush be managed?

Thrush is a type of yeast infection that appears due to an imbalance of bacteria in the genital area of both males and females. Although thrush can affect both men and women, the infection is more common in females as the vagina has better conditions for the bacteria to cultivate than the penis does.

Thrush is transferred from person to person during sexual intercourse but it is not classed as an STI, as the yeast that causes the thrush is always in your body and does not initially get transferred from individual to individual.

Thrush is caused by a fungus known as ‘candida albicans’. These organisms are always present in the human body, but on occasions, if they are in moist areas, like the mouth and genitals, the fungus can begin to grow faster and may grow faster than the immune system breaking it down, leading to what we know as 'thrush'.

Thrush is extremely common, in women, in today's society, with around 75% of females being affected by this at least once at some point in their life. Using things such as antibiotics, also females that use the contraceptive pill are both interfering with their bacteria balance, which then could possibly lead to thrush.

Some tips that the NHS recommends you try yourself to ease the discomfort of thrush and prevent it from returning include drying properly after washing, using water and emollient (E45 cream), wearing cotton underwear and avoiding sex until the thrush has cleared up if it’s uncomfortable. The NHS also recommends that you shouldn’t use soaps or shower gels, you shouldn’t use deodorant or douches on your vagina or penis and you shouldn’t wear tight underwear or tights. Many sexual health clinics offer a walk-in service where you don’t need an appointment and you can visit if you want to get help with treating thrush.
