Aciclovir, a prescription medication, is utilized for the treatment of herpes and other viral infections. It works by reducing the discomfort and accelerating the healing of sores or blisters in individuals with chickenpox or varicella, shingles or herpes zoster, and initial or recurring outbreaks of genital herpes. Aciclovir is also used to prevent genital herpes outbreaks in individuals previously infected with the virus. However, it should not be used to treat herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections in infants under 3 months old or for severe HSV infections in children with low immunity.
