Ozempic

Description

Ozempic (Semaglutide) is an injectable drug used to treat type 2 diabetes and it has a weight loss effect by reducing appetite and promoting feelings of fullness. It works by mimicking the effects of naturally occurring glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which is a hormone that regulates appetite and glucose levels in the body. Ozempic is not indicated for Weight loss in the UK and is currently prescribed off-label.

The injection pen should be used as part of a comprehensive weight loss program that includes a healthy diet and physical activity.

Patients should always talk to their doctor about their medical history, any existing conditions, and potential drug interactions before starting treatment with Ozempic.

Directions

Before starting Ozempic® treatment, carefully read the instructions provided by your healthcare professional. This medicine is administered via subcutaneous injection, typically once a week. The initial dose is 0.25 mg for the first four weeks, followed by an increase to 0.5 mg once a week. Depending on your blood sugar control, your doctor may further adjust the dosage to 1 mg or 2 mg once a week.

Ingredients

Each pre-filled pen of Ozempic® contains 4 mg of semaglutide in 3 ml solution, with each dose delivering 1 mg of semaglutide in 0.74 ml. Additional ingredients include disodium phosphate dihydrate, propylene glycol, phenol, water for injections, and sodium hydroxide/hydrochloric acid (for pH adjustment).

Side effects

As with any medication, Ozempic® may have potential side effects. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). More serious but rare side effects may include complications of diabetic eye disease (retinopathy), inflamed pancreas (acute pancreatitis), severe allergic reactions, and delayed gastric emptying. It is crucial to discuss any side effects with your healthcare provider.

Warnings

Prior to using Ozempic®, it's essential to consult your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse, especially if you have type 1 diabetes, a history of diabetic ketoacidosis, or other medical conditions. Be cautious of potential interactions with other medications, such as warfarin or oral anticoagulants. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should seek medical advice before using this medicine.

FAQs

Can Ozempic® be used as a standalone treatment for diabetes?

Ozempic® can be used on its own if your blood sugar is not well controlled by diet and exercise alone and if you cannot use metformin. However, your healthcare provider may also prescribe it in combination with other diabetes medications if needed.

Is Ozempic® suitable for children and adolescents with diabetes?

Ozempic® is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, as its safety and efficacy in this age group have not been established.

How does Ozempic® compare to other diabetes medications like insulin?

Ozempic® is not an insulin; it belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It helps lower blood sugar levels by stimulating the release of insulin and reducing glucagon secretion. It can be used as an alternative or in combination with other diabetes medications, including insulin.

Can Ozempic® be used by pregnant or breastfeeding individuals?

Ozempic® should not be used during pregnancy, and breastfeeding individuals should avoid using it, as its effects on unborn children and breast milk are not well understood. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor for guidance on diabetes management.

How does Ozempic® interact with other medications?

Ozempic® may interact with certain medications, such as warfarin or insulin. It's important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications, including over-the-counter and herbal products, you are taking before starting Ozempic®. Your doctor will provide guidance on potential interactions and necessary adjustments.
