What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia trachomatis is a common STD that mostly affects young women, but it can occur in both men and women and in all age groups.
If left untreated, It can cause permanent damage to a woman’s reproductive system. This can result to fertility issues for women who try to conceive. There is also an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy that occurs outside the womb) for women with chlamydia. The bacteria are usually spread through sex or contact with infected genital fluids (semen or vaginal fluid). Whether the sex partner ejaculates or not, chlamydia can also be transmitted. Pregnant women can pass the infection to their baby during childbirth. Other complications include infection near the testicles (epididymitis), Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), Prostate gland infection and reactive arthritis.

If you are sexually active, had multiple sex partners, experiencing any symptoms or feeling generally concerned; please contact us and feel free to have an honest and open talk. How do I know if I have Chlamydia?

You may not necessarily experience any symptoms with chlamydia, however if left untreated, it can cause serious complications e.g. fertility problems for women. Symptoms may not appear until several weeks after having sexual intercourse with a partner who has been affected.

Women with symptoms may notice; An abnormal vaginal discharge and a burning sensation when peeing. Men with symptoms may notice; a discharge from their penis, a burning sensation when peeing and pain and swelling in one or both testicles (although this is less common).

You should get tested if your partner has an STD or if you're experiencing any of the following symptoms: sore genitals, a smelly discharge, a burning sensation when peeing or bleeding between periods (in women).

Is there a cure for Chlamydia?

Yes, the right treatment can cure chlamydia. More than 95% of people will be cured if they take their antibiotics correctly. When antibiotics are taken properly, it will stop the infection and could decrease your chances of having problems later. Although the antibiotic will stop the infection, it will not undo any permanent damage caused by the disease. You may be started on antibiotics once test results have confirmed you have chlamydia. Repeat infection with chlamydia is common. You should receive testing again about three months after your treatment, even if your sex partner(s) receives treatment.

How can I reduce my risk of getting Chlamydia?

If you are sexually active, the following things can lower your chances of getting chlamydia:

Use a condom every time you have vaginal or anal sex, use a condom to cover the penis during oral sex, use a dam (a piece of thin, soft plastic or latex) to cover the female genitals during oral sex or when rubbing female genitals together, do not share sex toys. If you do share sex toys, ensure they have been washed thoroughly or cover them with a new condom between each person who uses them. Being in a long-term monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and does not have chlamydia could also lower your chances of getting chlamydia.

Azithromycin is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved antibiotic. It works to treat genital chlamydia in both men and women by stopping the bacteria from multiplying. A recent study found that azithromycin had an efficacy rate of 97 percent. Another study found that a single dose of azithromycin was as safe and effective as a 7-day course of doxycycline in the treatment of genital chlamydial infections. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention STD Treatment Guidelines suggest one dose of azithromycin (1 gram) taken orally will cure genital chlamydia.
